Email: [email protected] Focal symmetrical encephalomalacia (FSE) is the most prominent lesion seen in the chronic form of enterotoxemia by Clostridium perfringens type D. This paper reports FSE in sheep in Brazil. Six deaths occurred within a seven days period in a flock of 70, four to 30-month-old Santa Inês sheep in the state of Paraíba in the Brazilian semiarid. The flock was grazing a paddock of irrigated sprouting Cynodon dactylon (Tifton grass), and supplemented, ad libitum, with a concentrate of soybean, corn and wheat. Nervous signs included blindness and recumbence. A 19 month-old sheep was examined clinically and necropsied after a clinical course of three days. Gross lesions were herniation of the cerebellar vermis and multifocal, bilateral, symmetric brownish areas in the internal capsule, thalamus and cerebellar peduncles. Histologic lesions were multifocal, bilateral malacia with some neutrophils, swelling of blood vessels endothelium, perivascular edema, and hemorrhages. The flock was vaccinated, before the outbreak, with only one dose of Clostridium perfringens type D vaccine. Two factors are suggested to be important for the occurrence of the disease: insufficient immunity due to the incorrect vaccination; and high nutritional levels by the supplementation with highly fermentable carbohydrates.

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and encephalomalacia in a budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus)

Encephalomalacia is softening or loss of brain tissue following cerebral infarction; cerebral ischemia infection, craniocerebral trauma or other injuries. Cholangiocarcinomas are malignant neoplasms of biliary epithelium, which usually arise from the intrahepatic ducts. A budgerigar was presented with a history of ataxia, decreased activity, neck weakness and weight loss. Supportive care was at...

Bacterial meningitis in infants: sonographic features.

Twenty-three infants with clinically proven bacterial meningitis were studied with real-time cranial sonography at the time of initial diagnosis and in several cases subsequently. A spectrum of sonographic abnormalities was observed, including bright convolutional markings, focal or diffuse increased and/or decreased parenchymal echoes, ventricular debris, and hydrocephalus. In three infants wi...

Ictal bradyarrhythmias and asystole requiring pacemaker implantation: Combined EEG–ECG analysis of 5 cases

BACKGROUND Seizures can lead to cardiac arrhythmias by a number of mechanisms including activation/inhibition of cortical autonomic centers, increase in vagal tone through activation of brainstem reflex centers, and respiratory failure. Ictal asystole (IA) is a potential mechanism underlying sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). We analyzed the clinical features of 5 patients who develop...

Neurosonographic abnormalities in neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy.

Pattern of neurosonographic (NSG) abnormalities in 150 term newborn infants with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) was studied. Sonographic abnormalities, presumably indicating cerebral edema and or ischemia, were observed in 86% (n = 129) cases. Obliteration of the ventricles occurred as the sole abnormality in 30 (20%) cases. Eighty (53%) patients had diffusely increased echogenicity of t...

Sonographic recognition of multiple cystic encephalomalacia.

Multiple cysts in both hemispheres were detected in four children under 1 year of age by real-time sonographic sector scanning. These cysts, typical of multiple cystic encephalomalacia, followed viral encephalitis in two, bacterial meningitis in one, and bacterial meningitis superimposed on intracerebral hemorrhage in one. The diagnosis of multiple cystic encephalomalacia, which has a grave pro...
